DeAnna Pellecchia | Artist Statement
I consider myself to be a change leader, working towards redefining the role of art in culture. All of my creative projects promote collaboration, risk-taking, border-crossing, and thinking deeply about the boundaries of art and lived experience. I put together teams of artists who create programming and performances that give voice as a form of catharsis and growth to voiceless, underserved, and oppressed populations. My work is deeply rooted in feminism and has recently expanded to incorporate themes focused around LGBTQ social movements and transgender justice. I also have a long history of working with urban, at-risk youth on issues of race, identity and belonging. I create spaces where people are invited to gather, listen, create, empathize, communicate, hope, imagine, trust, act compassionately and most importantly, heal.
The world currently feels unsafe. And when nothing feels safe anymore, it’s easy to think that art doesn’t matter; but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Art is the ultimate force of creativity, hope, reflection, revolution and redemption.
Every dance I make, and workshop I teach, is an invitation, to performers, students and audience, to stand together in the fullness of the present moment and embrace our deepest humanity — our greatest failures, and our greatest virtues. KAIROS performances use story-telling as a catalyst; a catalyst for people to truly LISTEN to each other – to really HEAR each other’s stories – to dismantle the imagined barriers between us, to discover our sameness.
The only way the world is going to feel safe is if we deepen our understanding, our compassion, and our empathy for one another; because no matter how different each of us may be, we are all here sharing the same experiences, we all have common ground, and we all belong to each other.
We need this humanity now, more than ever.
I am on a mission to create a world where the vulnerable inner voice is not only allowed to safely express itself, but is celebrated for what it is – the truest and most magical form of being human. I am on a mission to make the world a better place, one dance at a time.
